Gamenight, January 31st 2008 Teams, Conferences Compete for Green Sports Dominance
On January 31st, Focus
the Nation is organizing a special day of national teach-ins
engaging millions of students and citizens with political leaders
and decision makers about Global Warming Solutions. That night,
hundreds of men's
and women's
basketball teams are playing and are being covered by radio
and television broadcasts, providing a perfect opportunity for
college and university communities to engage with athletic departments,
sponsors, and other sports enterprise partners about the most
appropriate and effective ways to call attention to energy and
climate leadership on each campus.
STAR • SPORTS is helping to catalyze, convene, and inform
these community conversations. Some of the emerging ideas include:
- Encouraging public transportation to and from games
- Presenting energy and conservation ideas for signage,
from sidewalks to arena scoreboards
- Providing "priority" event parking for fuel-efficient
cars and carpoolers
- Initiating student-researched "baseline greenhouse
gas inventories" for intercollegiate athletics activities
and initiating discussions of how to reduce these footprints
and use these programs as role models
- Honoring climate and energy researchers and campus-leaders
with half-time introductions and honors
- Providing radio and television producers with talking-points
and access to student and faculty experts for half-time
or "sidelines" interviews
- Deploying "street teams" strategically through arenas
to call attention to local and state renewable energy/energy
conservation plans
- Setting up green student sections in stadiums where young
people can wear green t-shirts to draw attention to environmental
programs and activities on campus. Example: At one school
an environmental club is wearing split colored t-shirts
to the game with the school color on one side and green
on the other with a statement that reads "Turning gold to
green".
Details about the upcoming "Gamenight Conference
Call" on January 10th will be broadcast on the
